The Producer Price Index for final demand climbed 1.3% in September, its largest monthly increase since March 2022, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Oct. 15. Prices had risen 0.5% in August. The September increase came from services as well as goods, with energy prices part of the pressure; the index measures prices received by domestic producers, not the prices consumers pay at checkout. BLS data matter because businesses may absorb, pass on or respond to higher input costs in different ways. The release is a warning about upstream price pressure, not proof that every household bill will rise by the same amount.
